FAQ's

Do I have to be a member of Redeemer to be in a small group?
Redeemer welcomes anyone interested in joining a small group. We love seeing people connecting and sharing.

How much do I need to know about the Bible before joining a group?
The purpose of being in a small group is to join with other ordinary people who are all trying to apply the truths of the Bible to everyday life situations. Extensive knowledge of the Bible is not necessary. You will become more comfortable with the book as you get into the habit of using it in the company of other people just like you.

How much of my time is going to be committed to the small group?
Most groups meet either weekly or every other week.

What are we going to be doing during group meetings?
Every group is different but there are some common denominators. Most groups have a time for just hanging out, talking about the week and what's going on in life. The central component is a study of something very relevant to the members of the group. It may be the study of a Book of the Bible. Or it might be a study such as dealing with stress or building better relationships from a biblical perspective. Our groups are designed to encourage discussion and engage each person in the process. In addition our groups pray for each other.

How many weeks or months is this group going to last?
It depends on the type of study and group you have joined.  Most groups meet from September through June, meeting twice a month.

Am I going to have to talk or can I just sit and listen?
Participation is up to you but our hope is that the group would become a comfortable place for everyone to share their thoughts, questions, and even doubts.  Learning takes place in the midst of the shared dialogue.

Will I be required to pray out loud?
We understand that praying silently may be more comfortable however, learning to pray out loud is a key component in deepening your relationship with Christ and his people.

Will there be homework? If so, how much?
Most groups do not assign homework in the traditional sense. However, if your group is using a prepared study with a participant’s guide, you may be encouraged to read a portion of the upcoming lesson. This kind of preparation generally enhances what you get out of the group time. Likewise, at the end of a session there should be some take away lesson that you are attempting to apply to your life.

If I don’t like it, can I leave without people being angry with me?
We encourage you to give the group you try a couple visits. Anytime you're trying something new, it may need to grow on you. In addition, it may take a couple of times to begin to feel like you're in the right place. But at the same time, we want you to find a group that fits you! So don't be afraid to join another group if the first one is not working out.

How long should an average small group meeting last?
The average meeting lasts from an hour and a half to two hours, however each group is different. Your leader will be able to provide clearer expectations.

Is there childcare available?
Every group deals with this issue in its own way. Some of the groups go in together and make arrangements for a baby sitter or take turns watching the children. Other groups require each participant to make their own arrangements.

How do I get into a group?
Groups that meet in the church building are always listed in the bulletin. You may contact the leader to ask about joining their study. For groups that meet in people’s homes, the best way to find a group is to call Shannan Slovon at (301) 253-3000.

Can I start my own group?
We love it when people are interested in leading or hosting a group of their own. If you would like more information about leading or hosting, please call Shannan Slovon at (301) 253-3000.
